What helpful words can you offer a new catechist who may be doubting his or her abilities? Catechist and author Carole M. Eipers, DMin, offers encouragement to the new volunteer who may be saying “I’m too young” or “I’m too old.” This reluctance to take on the important task of sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ is not only completely natural—it’s the hallmark of the beginning catechist. This Q and A, which was excerpted from Eipers’s book Catechist 101: Wade, Don’t Dive (Twenty-Third Publications), offers biblical support for the new catechist as well as ways to boost confidence before catechists begin to share their gifts and their faith.

As a new catechist myself, what has helped me is “praying to the Holy Spirit for guidance”. You will be amazed and how your confidence will grow. How Amazing is God…. Also to speak other catechists for their “words of wisdom.”
Thanks, Mary. This is good advice for all catechists. Blessings on your new school year.
