Jesus Christ, Our King

Jesus Christ, Our King

360

Sunday, November 25, marks the last Sunday of the Liturgical Year in the Catholic Church. It’s also the day that Catholics observe the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. It’s a good time to remember—especially in times of uncertainty and trouble—that Jesus Christ reigns over our world. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has collected a number of reflections on this solemnity, including this one on religious liberty.

Who is Jesus Christ? In the New Testament book, Matthew 24, Jesus Christ is revealed as the King of Israel. He is King of the Jews and King of the Gentiles. As such he possesses all the attributes of a king, ruling in righteousness, keeping good council, and carrying out justice according to the Torah and afterwards he gains eternal life through virtue and truth. Jesus Christ our King never suffers any loss or consequence in this life. On the contrary, he gains all the rewards and plights we mortals long to enjoy.

Jesus Christ our King, being God in the new dispensation, possesses all the rights, privileges, and powers inherent in any person or government under the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. If we are to honor and keep Him at the head of the government then we must expect Him to rise in judgment as our King. Jesus Christ our King will also be our Lord and Saviour. Nothing will be withheld from Him or withheld from His faithful servants who have been placed under His feet.

Jesus Christ our King is very special in that He possesses the keys of the kingdom of Heaven. These He willingly gives to those who are willing to follow Him. All sins are forgiven by Him. He rules and acts as a Redeemer, thus rendering Him the pre-eminent title one can bear, King of Kings!
